The Future of U.S. IP Policy Under the Trump Administration 📅 Date: March 6, 2025 ✍️ Author: Tanner Shae 🔗 Read more: https://ipwatchdog.com/2025/03/06/inside-beltway-future-u-s-ip-policy-trump-administration/id=186871/ With Donald Trump back in the White House, big changes could be coming for intellectual property (IP) laws in the U.S. At a recent IPWatchdog LIVE 2025 event, a panel of experts—including retired Judge Paul Michel and top government IP officials—discussed what inventors should expect under the new administration. What’s Changing? 1️⃣ Stronger Patent Protection? The new Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, is a businessman and inventor, so experts think the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) might become more supportive of inventors and small businesses instead of big companies. 2️⃣ New Patent Laws on the Way? Three major bills could fix problems in the patent system, making it easier to get and defend patents: - Patent Eligibility Reform Act (PERA): Clears up confusion about what can be patented. - PREVAIL Act: Prevents unfair challenges against patent owners. - RESTORE Act: Makes it easier for inventors to stop others from using their patents without permission. 3️⃣ China’s Growing Competition Experts warned that China is racing ahead in technology and patents. They say China is manipulating the system to benefit its own inventors while making it harder for U.S. inventors to compete. 4️⃣ Will the Courts Help? Judge Michel says U.S. courts are a mess right now when it comes to patent law. He believes Congress needs to step in quickly to fix the system before the U.S. falls behind. Why This Matters for Inventors 🔹 If you're an inventor or entrepreneur, these changes could impact your ability to get and protect patents. 🔹 If Congress passes new laws, it could make it easier to patent your ideas and harder for big companies to take them. 🔹 The U.S. is in a technology race with China, and stronger IP policies could help American inventors stay competitive. 💡 What do you think?
